Pursuit Of Liberty

Liberty and Freedom are often used interchangeably.  No matter which one you use there is a vital concept often missing when the subjects of freedom or liberty are considered.  In this Church we use different meanings for each word.  Click here for the information on "freedom" and stay on this page for the reference to "liberty."

"Liberty from what?" is the question to ask.  What do you want "liberty from?"  Or, "Freedom to do what?"

Without identification of that from which you want liberty, you do not have a useful term.  Without knowing WHAT you want freedom to do, you do not have a useful term.

"Liberty from drugs?"  Is that the type of liberty you want?  How about the drug addict who wants "liberty from police arrest!"  How about the criminal who wants "liberty to steal?"  Usually we think of "liberty" as something to escape into from the jail of the oppressor.  Historically, we fought for liberty with guns.  In more modern days, at least in the US, we often seek liberty by law suit.

Liberty is meaningless without a common sense moral code -- the anchor -- the compass.  When you do have that common sense moral code you can THEN consider that you, and your friends, want liberty from the immoral behavior of others around you.

In some churches the faithful "pray that the sinner repents."  In this Church, we do not have a spiritual technology of prayer, although most of our Members believe devoutly in prayer.  In this Church  we need to follow the old truism:  "God helps those who help themselves."   That truism is not particularly a part of our dogma, but it is a common motto in the larger society.

And so we suggest that the liberty we believe in, in this Church of Compassionate Service, is the liberty from being the adverse effect of immoral behavior by others.  We refer to "good deeds" and "acts of compassion" to hold ourselves to the moral side of behavior.

In short, we want a civil and moral society in which to live.

We can only achieve that by identifying those who share these values, and combining into such groups as will practice the very moral code which we espouse.

So, LIBERTY is a useless term without the identification of the oppressors in society -- or the family.  Man, on an individual level and basis, must find a way to expel from his midst those who transgress the common moral code, and find others who share that code.

This Church offers you a chance to demonstrate your acceptance and adherence to the common sense moral code, and further, to CO-OPERATE with others of like persuasion.  This Church is built on DEEDS not thoughts or good intentions not carried out.
